Jonathan Katz, CEO of National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA), was the opening keynote speaker with his presentation, The Public Value of Museums.
Katz was awarded tenure as professor of public policy and administration at the University of Illinois at Springfield, where he directed the graduate program in arts administration and established the Sangamon Institute in Arts Administration. Before then, Katz was Executive Director of the Kansas Arts Commission and he has taught communication, literature and creative writing at universities in Indiana, Ohio and Kansas. Katz has also consulted extensively in cultural policy planning, organizational development, leadership and management training, and has authored numerous articles, plans and consultant reports. His presentations on the policies, issues and trends that affect participation in cultural activities are a frequent feature at national and state conferences, and at state arts agency planning sessions.

When I reviewed the slides, I realized how much of what I presented was drawn from notes and citations. That was purposeful, because I wanted the presentation to be strongly visual, but I felt I had to prepare the "Slide supplement" material that I have also appended. Not sure the best way to share all this online, but I'll leave that up to you. All the citations and exhibition images are available online. Almost all the bullet point material and all the diagrams -- branding, advocacy, etc. -- are mine and original, so I would appreciate the presentation being cited if anybody uses them.
