ANNUAL MPMA MUSEUM CONFERENCE IN CHEYENNE
Cheyenne: Former United States Senator Alan K. Simpson and his brother, Dr. Peter Simpson, the Distinguished Simpson Professor of Political Science at the University of Wyoming, will address the largest museum conference to be held in the state of Wyoming, October 8, 2009. Their talk at a luncheon to be held at the Holiday Inn Cheyenne is entitled A New Cork in an Old Flask -A “Simpson Eye” View of the West. These well-known Western icons, representing one of the most beloved and charismatic of Wyoming “First Families,” reflect on the tensions, the triumphs and the turbulence of Wyoming’s colorful history. They will also speak to the paradoxes the “cowboy state” faces as it wrestles to reconcile its old west legacy with the challenges of a new world. “Al and Pete Simpson are treasure troves of Western wit and folklore,” says CU-Boulder History Professor Patricia Limerick, “Anybody who claims to know the West, needs to know the Simpsons.” The event is open to the public. Reservations are required.
The luncheon will also feature a special presentation to Senator Mike Enzi for his support of museums in Wyoming and around the nation. The luncheon will be held from 12 noon to 1:45 pm. Samuel M. Trautman of Snowy Range Graphics in Laramie is the Luncheon Sponsor.
The luncheon is being held in conjunction with the Mountain-Plains Museums Association’s 2009 annual museum conference, October 5-9th. Over 250 museum staff, volunteers and board members are expected to attend the conference. In addition, museum representatives from nine other western states in addition to Wyoming will converge on the town to hear about the latest developments in the museum field.
